Did you know that Arctic Monkeys were one of the first acts to come to the public attention via the Internet?

Arctic Monkeys were heralded as one of the first acts to come to the public attention via the Internet (fan-based sites rather than from the band), with commentators suggesting they represented the possibility of a change in the way in which new bands are promoted and marketed. The band eventually signed to the independent record label Domino Records.

Arctic Monkeys are an English alternative rock band from High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. Formed in 2002, the band currently consists of Alex Turner (lead vocals, guitar), Jamie Cook (guitar), Nick O'Malley (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Matt Helders (drums, backing vocals).

The band was criticized as "money-grabbing" and "cashing in on their success" when their EP "Who the Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys" was released. The band countered the criticism by saying that they regularly release new music not to make money, but to avoid the "boredom" of "spending three years touring on one album".  With the huge success that Arctic Monkeys achieved, they were awarded with a Guinness World Record for the Fastest Selling UK Debut Album with "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I Am Not," selling  363,735 copies in its first week and 113,000 on its first day (September 2006). This album was also the second fastest selling for a Debut Indie Album in the US in 2006. Arctic Monkeys s fans used the internet to create fan-based sites to express their thoughts and emotions on how well they love and appreciate the band's songs and the people behind it. That's why this band was heralded as the first acts to come to the public attention via the Internet.

Arctic Monkeys guitarist Jamie Cook has expressed optimism at the potential for a 2014 Australian tour during a recent interview. Cook discussed the band’s current plans and assured fans “don’t worry, we’ll definitely be down there, hopefully when it’s warm.”

The band’s upcoming fifth studio album, AM is slated for a 6th September Australian release, but Cook reassured fans that they’re keeping Australia in mind for any potential live shows, saying:

“It’s one of our favourite places to come and I’m not just saying that. Any excuse to tread down there and do some gigs. But hopefully next year some time.”
